Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ verbal reasoning prep for a child in Hertfordshire?
For Hertfordshire parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ verbal reasoning preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise verbal reasoning in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused verbal reasoning work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
Is verbal reasoning part of the SET test?
Yes — the SET test includes a verbal reasoning section alongside English and maths. It is modelled on GL Assessment and covers the standard set of verbal reasoning question types: analogies, codes, synonyms, antonyms, word chains, letter series, sentence completion, and so on.
Do Habs Boys and Habs Girls include verbal reasoning in their own papers?
Habs Boys and Habs Girls both include verbal reasoning-style questions within their Quest Learning adaptive assessments (Habs Boys in mid-December, Habs Girls in mid-November). Practice on GL-style verbal reasoning transfers well to the Quest Learning format.
Which question types should we focus on first?
Start with analogies, synonyms/antonyms and letter sequences — these are the most common and highest-weighted across SET and Habs-style papers. Code questions and word-chains come next. Leave the obscure types (like hidden words or number-letter patterns) until the last few months.
