Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ maths prep for a child in Hertfordshire?
For Hertfordshire parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ maths preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise maths in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused maths work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
What is the SET test in Hertfordshire?
The SET (Schools' Entry Test) is run by a consortium of Herts grammar schools including Watford Boys', Watford Girls', Parmiter's, Queens' School Bushey and Rickmansworth. The maths section is GL-Assessment-style: 45 questions in 50 minutes, mostly multiple choice.
When do Habs Boys and Habs Girls hold their 11+ maths paper?
Habs Boys (Haberdashers' Boys' School, Elstree) holds its entrance assessments in mid-December of Year 6, and Habs Girls in mid-November. Both schools now use the Quest Learning adaptive online test (maths, English, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and problem solving) plus a 30-minute handwritten creative writing paper. Registration closes in the autumn of Year 6 — check each school's admissions page for the current deadline.
Is the St Albans School maths paper harder than the SET?
Yes, slightly — the St Albans School and St Albans High School for Girls papers include more problem-solving and require children to show working for partial marks. The SET is more about fast accurate multiple-choice work. Our tutors prepare for both formats if your target list includes schools from each.
