Expert verbal reasoning preparation for London families targeting grammar and selective independent schools.

Verbal reasoning is the piece of the London 11+ that parents find hardest to help with at home, because the question types don't look like anything in the normal school curriculum. Code-breaking, analogies, odd-one-out, letter and number sequences, word chains — these are trainable patterns, and children who practise…

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ verbal reasoning prep for a child in London?
For London parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ verbal reasoning preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise verbal reasoning in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused verbal reasoning work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
Which London schools use verbal reasoning in their 11+?
All the schools using ISEB Common Pre-Test — City of London School, St Paul's Junior, Westminster Under School, Highgate, KCS Wimbledon, UCS, Dulwich and Alleyn's — include verbal reasoning. A handful of the senior-school follow-up papers also include a short verbal reasoning section.
Is verbal reasoning the same as English comprehension?
No — they test different skills. English comprehension tests how well your child understands a passage of writing; verbal reasoning tests pattern recognition with words, letters and sometimes numbers. Children strong in comprehension are not automatically strong in verbal reasoning, and vice versa.
How fast does my child need to work on ISEB verbal reasoning?
Roughly 30–40 seconds per question once they hit the harder adaptive section. That speed only comes from practice — our lessons include regular timed drills so children build the pace gradually rather than crashing into it in September of Year 6.
