Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ verbal reasoning prep for a child in Surrey?
For Surrey parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ verbal reasoning preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise verbal reasoning in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused verbal reasoning work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
How many verbal reasoning question types are on the GL paper?
GL Assessment uses 21 standard verbal reasoning question types including codes, analogies, antonyms, synonyms, word chains, letter series, hidden words, and more. Your child is not expected to see all 21 in any single paper, but any of them can appear — so preparation needs to cover the full set.
When is the Surrey grammar verbal reasoning test?
The Sutton consortium (Sutton Grammar, Wilson's, Wallington, Nonsuch) verbal reasoning test is typically sat in mid-September at the start of Year 6, at the same time as the maths paper. Tiffin School runs its own two-stage timetable — Stage 1 in October, Stage 2 in mid-November. Check each school's admissions page for the current year's registration deadline.
Can my child catch up on verbal reasoning in 3 months?
Possibly — it depends where they are starting. Children with strong vocabulary and good test-taking habits can close a gap in 3 months with weekly lessons plus daily short practice. Children starting from scratch usually need 5–6 months to feel confident on the full GL set.
