Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ English prep for a child in Hertfordshire?
For Hertfordshire parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ English preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise English in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused English work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
What is the SET English paper like?
The SET English paper is multiple-choice, roughly 45–50 questions in under an hour, covering vocabulary, comprehension, grammar and cloze. It is run by the Herts consortium. There is no creative writing at SET stage.
Do Habs Boys and St Albans School include creative writing in the 11+?
Yes — Habs Boys, Habs Girls, St Albans School and St Albans High School for Girls all include a creative writing element in their own-school 11+ assessments. Habs Boys holds its assessment in mid-December and Habs Girls in mid-November, both using a 30-minute handwritten creative writing paper alongside the Quest Learning adaptive test. St Albans School and St Albans High sit their papers in January of Year 6.
How should we split English prep between SET and independent formats?
Most Herts families spend Year 5 on shared skills (reading, vocabulary, slow comprehension) and then pivot in summer of Year 5: weight SW Herts Consortium-style practice until the autumn test, then transition to Quest Learning-style practice for Habs (November/December), and finally the St Albans January papers. Our tutors build this three-stage transition into the weekly plan automatically.
