Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ maths prep for a child in Surrey?
For Surrey parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ maths preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise maths in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused maths work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
Which maths exam do Surrey grammar schools use?
Sutton Grammar, Wilson's, Wallington County Grammar and Nonsuch High form the Sutton consortium and all use GL Assessment maths. Tiffin School (Boys) sets its own two-stage test, and Tiffin Girls' Stage 1 is written by GL Assessment. Reigate Grammar, RGS Guildford and Kingston Grammar set independent maths papers that go slightly beyond GL in problem-solving depth.
When is the Surrey 11+ test date?
The Sutton consortium test (Sutton Grammar, Wilson's, Wallington, Nonsuch) is typically sat in mid-September at the start of Year 6. Tiffin School runs its own timetable — Stage 1 in October, Stage 2 in mid-November. Reigate and RGS Guildford set their own papers in January of Year 6. These different dates mean your child's prep plan has to flex across the autumn and winter of Year 6.
Can you help my child prepare for both GL and independent formats at the same time?
Yes — that is exactly what most Surrey families need. Our tutors split sessions 70/30 in the summer (weighted GL for the September test), then pivot to the independent format in October–December.
