Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ English prep for a child in Surrey?
For Surrey parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ English preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise English in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused English work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
How does the Tiffin School English test work?
Tiffin School runs its own two-stage tests — Stage 1 in October (Tiffin-specific paper for Tiffin Boys; GL Assessment for Tiffin Girls) and Stage 2 in mid-November. The Sutton consortium (Sutton Grammar, Wilson's, Wallington, Nonsuch) uses the GL Assessment English test: roughly 45–50 questions in under an hour, multiple-choice, covering comprehension, vocabulary, sentence completion and cloze. There is no creative writing component at Sutton consortium stage one.
Which Surrey schools include a creative writing paper?
Reigate Grammar, Royal Grammar School Guildford, Kingston Grammar and Lady Eleanor Holles all include creative writing at some stage of the 11+ process — usually as a 25–35 minute timed piece. The Sutton consortium GL paper (Sutton Grammar, Wilson's, Wallington, Nonsuch) and Tiffin School's own two-stage tests do not include dedicated creative writing.
How much reading should my child do each week?
We aim for 30–45 minutes of independent reading per day during Year 5, with a quick daily chat about the book — what's happening, what does that word mean, what do you think the character will do next. That daily conversation is worth more than any vocabulary workbook.
