Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ verbal reasoning prep for a child in Essex?
For Essex parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ verbal reasoning preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise verbal reasoning in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused verbal reasoning work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
Is there a separate verbal reasoning paper in the CSSE 11+?
No — the CSSE 11+ does not have a standalone verbal reasoning paper. Verbal reasoning question types (vocabulary, synonyms, sentence completion) are embedded within the CSSE English paper. Children do not sit a dedicated reasoning test for Essex state grammars.
Do Essex independent schools set verbal reasoning?
Some do — Brentwood School, Felsted, Bancroft's and New Hall variously include verbal reasoning sections in their own entrance papers. Each school has its own format so it is worth checking the specific target schools' requirements.
How does Essex verbal reasoning differ from Kent or Surrey?
Essex (CSSE) verbal reasoning is closer to sophisticated English vocabulary and comprehension work. Kent and Surrey use GL-Assessment-style papers with distinct pattern-recognition question types (codes, analogies, letter series). A child preparing well for Essex 11+ English is mostly prepared for Essex "verbal reasoning" by default.
