11+ Maths Tutoring in Essex — CSSE Prep for Year 5 & 6

Expert maths preparation for Essex families targeting grammar and selective independent schools.

Essex parents face a unique challenge: the CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) 11+ maths paper is longer and harder than the national average, and it is written by a small group of Essex grammar heads rather than a national exam board. That means standard CGP-style practice books only get you halfway — the…

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ maths prep for a child in Essex?
For Essex parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ maths preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise maths in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused maths work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
What is the CSSE and how is it different from other 11+ tests?
The CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) runs its own 11+ test separately from GL Assessment and CEM. The maths paper is 60 minutes, mostly open-answer (not multiple choice), and includes a handful of multi-step questions that require showing working. The style is closer to a school maths test than a psychometric 11+.
When is the CSSE test held?
The CSSE 11+ test is held in mid-to-late September at the start of Year 6 — for 2027 entry the CSSE has confirmed Saturday 19 September 2026 (reserve date 29 September 2026). Registration for 2027 entry opens at 9am on 12 May 2026 and closes at 5pm on 19 June 2026 — miss the deadline and your child cannot sit that year. Results are typically released in October.
Do Westcliff High and Southend High use the CSSE test?
Westcliff High for Boys, Westcliff High for Girls, Southend High for Boys and Southend High for Girls all use the CSSE 11+ paper. So do Colchester Royal Grammar, Colchester County High for Girls, King Edward VI Chelmsford and Chelmsford County High for Girls.
