11+ Non-Verbal Reasoning in Kent — Kent Test Reasoning

Expert non-verbal reasoning preparation for Kent families targeting grammar and selective independent schools.

Non-verbal reasoning is one of three sections in the Kent Test (alongside English and maths) and children need a solid mark in all three to qualify for a grammar place. The NVR section is written by GL Assessment and includes the standard question bank: pattern completion, matrix puzzles, shape analogies, rotation,…

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ non-verbal reasoning prep for a child in Kent?
For Kent parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ non-verbal reasoning preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise non-verbal reasoning in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused non-verbal reasoning work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
Is non-verbal reasoning part of the Kent Test?
Yes — the Kent Test has three sections: English (including optional composition), maths and reasoning, where reasoning combines verbal and non-verbal elements. NVR carries meaningful weight towards the overall standardised score.
What is a strong NVR score for Kent?
The reasoning section (combined verbal + non-verbal) needs to contribute to an aggregate of 332 or more across all three Kent Test sections, with no single section below the KCC minimum (around 106 for recent years). For super-selectives, Judd's 2025 entry cut-off was 371 (inner area) aggregate. NVR has to carry its weight in that combined reasoning score.
How do we practise NVR without expensive workbooks?
GL publishes past papers and practice materials that are reasonably priced. The Bond 11+ series is also affordable and covers most NVR question types. But nothing beats a tutor who can watch how your child approaches a problem and correct bad habits live — a single 45-minute lesson can save hours of solo practice going the wrong way.
