11+ Non-Verbal Reasoning Tutoring in London

Expert non-verbal reasoning preparation for London families targeting grammar and selective independent schools.

Non-verbal reasoning (NVR) is the section of the London 11+ that looks hardest to parents but is usually the most trainable for children. ISEB Common Pre-Test — used by City of London School, St Paul's, Westminster Under School, Highgate, KCS Wimbledon and UCS — includes a substantial non-verbal reasoning section with…

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ non-verbal reasoning prep for a child in London?
For London parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ non-verbal reasoning preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise non-verbal reasoning in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused non-verbal reasoning work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
Does ISEB Common Pre-Test include non-verbal reasoning?
Yes — ISEB CPT has four sections: English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Non-verbal reasoning carries equal weight to the other three, so it is worth preparing thoroughly.
How many NVR question types are there?
Roughly 8–10 main types: pattern completion, matrix reasoning, shape analogies, rotation, reflection, odd-one-out, 3D nets, series completion, and a few sub-types of each. Children who see all of these during prep usually find the real paper manageable.
Is NVR easier for children with strong maths skills?
Often yes — the pattern recognition in NVR overlaps with mathematical reasoning skills. But children with weaker maths can still do very well on NVR with focused practice. It is one of the most trainable sections of the 11+.
