11+ Maths Tutoring in Kent — Kent Test Preparation

Expert maths preparation for Kent families targeting grammar and selective independent schools.

The Kent Test is unlike any other 11+ maths paper in the country. It is set by GL Assessment for Kent County Council and sits at the start of Year 6 — typically early-to-mid September. KCC publishes the exact test date each year on kent.gov.uk; always check the current date rather than relying on historical timing.…

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ maths prep for a child in Kent?
For Kent parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ maths preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise maths in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused maths work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
When is the Kent Test sat?
The Kent Test is sat in early-to-mid September at the start of Year 6. Registration opens at Kent County Council in the preceding summer term and the deadline is tight — miss it and your child cannot sit the test that year. Results come out in mid-October.
What score do I need for Judd or Tonbridge Grammar?
Judd and Tonbridge Grammar are the two most competitive Kent grammars. The Kent Test standardises each section on a 69–141 scale; a child is deemed grammar-qualifying with an aggregate score of 332 or more across English, maths and reasoning, with no single section below the KCC minimum (around 106 for recent years). Judd and Tonbridge Grammar then rank applicants by aggregate — Judd's published 2025 entry cut-off was 371 (inner area) and 398 (outer area). Cut-offs vary year to year by cohort.
Can we start Kent Test prep in the Easter holidays of Year 5?
Yes — Easter of Year 5 is a good starting point if you haven't already begun. Expect 5 months of weekly structured work, then intensive timed-paper practice across August. We usually advise against starting any later than June of Year 5.
