Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ English prep for a child in Kent?
For Kent parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ English preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise English in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused English work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
Is the Kent Test written composition marked for every child?
No — it is only marked for children whose multiple-choice results sit close to the grammar threshold. Kent County Council uses the composition as a tie-breaker. That said, you cannot know in advance if your child will fall into the "borderline" zone, so we recommend every child prepares for the composition regardless.
What vocabulary level does the Kent Test expect?
The Kent Test English paper includes vocabulary roughly at Year 7 level. Words like "reluctant", "persistent", "conceal", "fundamental" appear routinely. We build this vocabulary through reading and targeted word lists rather than rote learning.
What is a good Kent Test English score?
The grammar-qualifying rule is an aggregate score of 332 or more across the three standardised sections (English, maths, reasoning) with no single section below the KCC minimum (around 106 for recent years). Super-selectives like Judd publish their own aggregate cut-offs — Judd's 2025 entry cut-off was 371 (inner area). The English paper carries equal weight to maths and reasoning in the aggregate.
