What We Cover

Each topic is taught with clear explanations and regular practice to build lasting understanding.

1

Openings That Hook

Start strong in the first sentence — admissions tutors read hundreds of pieces and attention is scarce.

2

Structure & Paragraphing

Three or four clear paragraphs, each doing one job. Avoid the "and then, and then" trap.

3

Voice & Descriptive Precision

Show rather than tell; choose precise verbs; build a distinctive voice under time pressure.

4

Surrey Exam Format

We prepare your child specifically for the papers that matter in Surrey: School-specific creative writing papers. Timed practice and format-specific technique, not generic drilling.

5

Target Schools in Surrey

We know the entry standards for Reigate Grammar School, Royal Grammar School Guildford, Kingston Grammar School and the other selective schools in Surrey. You will know exactly where your child stands from lesson two.

6

Your Weekly Lesson Plan

One tutored session per week, a short homework pack to reinforce it, and a written parent update. In the final eight weeks before the test, we switch to timed paper practice with detailed feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before getting started.

When should we start 11+ creative writing prep for a child in Surrey?
For Surrey parents aiming at grammar or selective independent schools, most families who get good results start structured 11+ creative writing preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 — roughly 12 to 18 months before the test. Starting earlier than that often leads to burnout; starting later than 6 months out tends to mean rushing through the topics that matter most. Our tutors design a pace that fits the time you have.
How often should my child practise creative writing in the run-up to the 11+?
Three shorter sessions across the week beats one long Saturday session every time. Aim for 30–45 minutes of focused creative writing work per session, plus one weekly tutor lesson. In the final 8 weeks before the test, we add timed paper practice — both to build stamina and to train the "exam brain" so the real test feels familiar.
Do Surrey grammar schools include creative writing?
The GL Assessment grammar 11+ used by the Sutton consortium (Sutton Grammar, Wilson's, Wallington, Nonsuch) does not include creative writing. Tiffin School's own two-stage tests also do not include a dedicated creative writing paper. The Surrey independents (Reigate Grammar, RGS Guildford, Kingston Grammar, Lady Eleanor Holles) do include a creative writing piece in their own entrance papers.
How often should my child practise creative writing?
Once or twice a week during active prep, with detailed feedback. Writing a daily piece without feedback tends to bake in bad habits; writing twice a week with a tutor reviewing the work and suggesting specific improvements is much more efficient.
What prompts do Surrey independent schools use?
Prompts vary year to year but fall into familiar categories: narrative (write a story about…), descriptive (describe a place or scene), continuation (continue this opening…), and occasionally personal reflection. We practise all four types so children feel confident whatever the prompt.
