How UCAS tariff points work
The UCAS Tariff translates your Level 3 results into points so that universities can compare applicants fairly, even when they hold different qualifications. Each qualification is scored on two things: its size (how much teaching and assessment it involves) and the grade you achieve. A full A-Level is larger than an AS-Level, so an A-Level at grade A (48 points) is worth more than an AS-Level at grade A (20 points).
To find your total, add the points for every qualification together. A student predicted A, A and B at A-Level would score 48 + 48 + 40 = 136 points. Adding an EPQ at grade B (20 points) would bring the total to 156 points. What are UCAS tariff points?
UCAS tariff points convert your Level 3 qualifications — such as A-Levels, BTECs, T Levels and the EPQ — into a single numerical score. Universities and colleges use them to set entry requirements and to compare applicants who hold different qualifications.
How do I calculate my UCAS points?
Add together the tariff value of each qualification at the grade you achieved or are predicted. For example, three A-Levels at A, B and B are worth 48 + 40 + 40 = 128 UCAS points. The calculator on this page does the arithmetic for you as you add each qualification.
How many UCAS points do you need for university?
It varies by course. Many undergraduate courses ask for between 96 points (equivalent to CCC at A-Level) and 144 points (AAA), while more competitive courses often state exact grades instead of a points total. Always check the entry requirements for each course on UCAS.
Do all universities use UCAS points?
No. Many universities, especially Russell Group institutions, specify grades (for example ABB at A-Level) rather than a points total. Always check the individual entry requirements for each course you apply to.
Do GCSEs count towards UCAS points?
No. GCSEs are Level 2 qualifications and carry no UCAS tariff points. Only Level 3 qualifications — such as A-Levels, AS-Levels, BTECs, T Levels and the EPQ — attract tariff points, although some courses still ask for specific GCSE grades separately.
How many UCAS points is an A* at A-Level worth?
An A* at A-Level is worth 56 UCAS points. The full A-Level scale is A* = 56, A = 48, B = 40, C = 32, D = 24 and E = 16.
Does the EPQ count for UCAS points?
Yes. A standalone Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is worth up to 28 points: A* = 28, A = 24, B = 20, C = 16, D = 12 and E = 8. Some universities also make a reduced offer to students who achieve a strong EPQ grade.
Can I combine different qualifications?
Yes. You can combine tariff points from A-Levels, BTECs, T Levels, the EPQ and other approved qualifications to meet a points-based offer. Check that your specific combination and subjects are accepted by each course, as some require particular subjects.
What's the maximum UCAS points I can get?
Three A* grades at A-Level give 168 UCAS points. Adding an EPQ at A* (28 points) takes you to 196. There is no fixed ceiling, because you can include further qualifications such as additional A-Levels alongside your main subjects.
