Year 6 SATs 2027 Countdown

SATs 2027 start Monday 10 May 2027.

Days remaining

210

Year 6 SATs 2027 begin in 210 days (30 weeks to go).

Where you are right now

The plan below runs for the five weeks before the tests. This is the part that applies today.

This term · Foundations

Too early to revise — build the foundations instead

  • Read every day, twenty minutes of anything they enjoy — reading speed and vocabulary carry more marks in the reading paper than any technique
  • Times tables to 12 × 12 until recall is instant, because fractions, ratio and long multiplication all sit on top of them
  • Ten minutes of arithmetic two or three times a week — little and often, not weekend marathons
  • Protect sleep and routine. They matter more in May than anything revised in September

Tutor tip: Starting a five-week revision plan eight months early does not add marks — it uses up a child's patience before the point where revision actually helps.

The five-week plan

Week 5 begins five weeks before the first paper — Monday 10 May 2027.

Week 5 · Maths

Arithmetic fluency and number

  • Fifteen minutes of arithmetic daily, in Paper 1 style: no calculator, no word problems, just speed and accuracy
  • Fractions — adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, then converting between fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Long multiplication and long division, which reliably appear and are reliably rushed
  • Mark together and note which operation is slowest, not just which is wrong

Tutor tip: Maths Paper 1 is arithmetic alone and carries 40 of the 110 maths marks. It rewards practice more directly than any other paper, because there is no reading or reasoning in the way.

Week 4 · English Reading

Reading comprehension

  • One reading paper section under timed conditions, using a real past paper
  • Mark it together with the official mark scheme rather than by impression
  • Sort the lost marks by question type — retrieval, inference, vocabulary, summary — so the pattern is visible
  • Practise "find and copy" questions: copy the exact words from the text, never paraphrase them

Tutor tip: Retrieval and find-and-copy questions are the fastest marks in the paper and are lost to paraphrasing more often than to misunderstanding. Inference is where the time actually goes.

Week 3 · GPS & Spelling

Grammar, punctuation and spelling

  • Fifteen minutes of grammar daily — subordinate clauses, relative clauses, modal verbs and the subjunctive form
  • Ten spellings from English Appendix 1, the statutory Year 5 and 6 word list
  • Punctuation practice: colons, semicolons, and parenthesis marked with brackets, dashes or commas
  • Write one short paragraph that uses three of the terms, so naming turns into using

Tutor tip: The grammar paper tests whether a child can name things as much as whether they can write. A child who writes beautifully but cannot identify a relative clause will still lose the mark.

Week 2 · Mixed

Full papers, properly timed

  • One full past paper every other day, rotating maths, reading and grammar
  • Keep to the real time limit — an untimed paper measures knowledge, not performance
  • Mark together and log every recurring mistake in a single notebook
  • Ten minutes of arithmetic alongside, to hold on to Week 5

Tutor tip: GOV.UK publishes the real past papers free, but only a rolling three-year window — download the ones you want now rather than assuming they will still be there next spring.

Week 1 · Mixed

Technique, not new content

  • Short timed sections rather than whole papers, working on pace and accuracy
  • Show working on every multi-mark maths question — mark schemes often award a method mark even when the final answer is wrong
  • Answer inference questions with evidence: make the point, then "because…", then a short quotation
  • Re-read the mistake notebook. No new topics this week

Tutor tip: Showing working is the cheapest mark in the maths papers. A child who writes nothing and gets it wrong scores zero; a child who shows a correct method and slips at the end often does not.

The test week: Monday 10 May 2027

Monday 10 May 2027
Grammar, punctuation and spelling — Paper 1 (questions) and Paper 2 (spelling)
Tuesday 11 May 2027
English reading
Wednesday 12 May 2027
Maths Paper 1 (arithmetic) and Paper 2 (reasoning)
Thursday 13 May 2027
Maths Paper 3 (reasoning)

There are no tests for English writing or science. Both are reported as a teacher assessment judgement instead, based on your child's work across the year.

Results reach schools in early July, reported as a scaled score between 80 and 120, where 100 is the expected standard.

Frequently asked questions

When are Year 6 SATs 2027?

Year 6 SATs 2027 run from Monday 10 May 2027 to Thursday 13 May 2027. Monday 10 May 2027 is English grammar, punctuation and spelling Papers 1 and 2. Tuesday 11 May 2027 is English reading. Wednesday 12 May 2027 is Mathematics Papers 1 and 2. Thursday 13 May 2027 is Mathematics Paper 3: reasoning.

What should we do on each day of the countdown?

This tool rotates between maths arithmetic, maths reasoning, English comprehension, GPS and spelling — matched to how much time you have left. Earlier in the countdown we focus on content gaps; in the final fortnight we focus on timed paper practice and confidence.

Is this tool a substitute for a tutor?

No — it is a daily focus guide. For children below expected standard or aiming for the higher standard, weekly tutoring is the best investment. The tool helps parents stay structured without buying 12 revision books.

When will we get SATs results in 2027?

Schools can view KS2 test results online from Tuesday 6 July 2027. Your child's school decides how it passes results on, but you should receive them before the end of the summer term.

What happens if my child is ill during SATs week?

A missed test can usually be taken up to 5 school days afterwards. The school has to apply to the Standards and Testing Agency for a timetable variation and have it approved, so tell them as early as you can.
